Just starting out and looking for advice? You're in the right place!

The starting point for beginners of all ages is CanSkate. Basic skating skills common to all ice sports, including figure skating and hockey, are learned there.

These programs are are taught by SkateCanada trained and certified professional coaches, assisted by a fantastic crew of volunteer Program Assistants.

What to Expect on Your First Day of CanSkate

Welcome to CanSkate! We’re so excited to have you join us on the ice. Here's a quick guide to help you and your skater feel prepared, confident, and ready to have fun!

Before You Arrive

  • Arrive Early (15–20 minutes before the session).
  • Dress your child in warm, layered clothing — snow pants, gloves, and a jacket are ideal.
  • CSA-approved hockey helmet is mandatory (bike helmets are not permitted).
  • Bring properly fitted skates — avoid molded plastic skates and do not remove toe picks from figure skates.
  • Gloves or mitts are required for warmth and safety.
  • Label all personal items!

What Happens at the Rink

  • Check in at the registration or welcome table.
  • Skaters are grouped by level or experience. If it’s your child’s first time skating, they’ll start in the Pre-CanSkate group.
  • Coaches and Program Assistants will lead a warm-up and fun activities right away — no prior skating skills needed!
  • Parents are not permitted in the players' benches or on the ice at any time. All parents are asked to observe from the stands.
  • All parents must remain in the rink for the duration of the lesson.

On the Ice

  • Expect lots of movement, music, and fun!
  • Skaters will learn key skills like:
    • How to fall down and get up safely
    • Balancing and marching
    • First steps toward gliding
  • The atmosphere is positive, playful, and supportive — learning through games and activities.

Important Notes

  • It’s normal if your child is nervous or unsure — give them time. Most kids warm up quickly.
  • Tears or hesitation are common in the first few sessions — we’re here to help every skater succeed at their own pace.
  • Progress is tracked, and badges and ribbons are earned along the way.

After the Session

  • Coaches may offer brief feedback or updates.
  • Give your skater lots of praise — no matter how far they got!
