STAR Program

The STAR Program is the next step for skaters progressing beyond CanSkate. It builds on the skills introduced in CanSkate and gives skaters the opportunity to continue developing their figure skating skills in a more advanced training environment.

Skaters progress at their own pace while developing confidence, independence and a strong foundation in figure skating.

What Do Skaters Learn?

The STAR 1–5 Program introduces skaters to the main disciplines of figure skating:
  • Freeskate – jumps, spins and skating movements
  • Skills – edges, turns, stroking and overall skating quality
  • Dance – steps, timing, rhythm and pattern dances
  • Artistic – performance, musical interpretation and presentation
  • Synchronized Skating – skating skills performed as part of a team

Skills introduced through CanSkate continue to be developed and refined as skaters begin working on more advanced elements such as jumps, spins, ice dance and skating skills.

How STAR Sessions Work

STAR sessions are structured differently from CanSkate and may include a combination of:
  • Group instruction
  • Small-group lessons
  • Stations
  • Independent practice
  • Private or semi-private coaching
  • Club-directed activities

This format allows skaters to work on a variety of skills while gradually becoming more independent on the ice.

Coaching

STAR skaters receive a combination of group, semi-private and private coaching as part of their training.

Some group lessons provided by Coach Akaya are included in program registration fees.

Additional group, semi-private and private coaching is billed separately by the coach providing the lesson. Families will receive invoices directly from the coach for these coaching fees.

The amount and type of coaching may vary depending on a skater's level, training needs and goals. Families are encouraged to speak with Coach Janessa if they have questions about coaching arrangements or fees.

Assessments

Assessments are an important part of the STAR Program and allow skaters, coaches and families to track progress and plan future goals.

Skaters are assessed when they are ready, rather than according to a set schedule. Every skater progresses differently, and there is no expectation that skaters of the same age or level will complete assessments at the same time.

A skater's coach will determine when they are prepared for an assessment and will let the skater and family know when it will take place.

Most STAR 1–5 assessments can be completed during a skater's regular training session. Some assessments may require additional or clear ice time.

A Skate Canada assessment fee applies to each assessment and must be paid before the assessment is completed.

Off-Ice Training

As skaters progress, off-ice training may also become part of their development.

This can include:
  • Warm-up activities
  • Jump training
  • Stretching and flexibility
  • Strength and conditioning
  • Movement and fitness

Off-ice training helps prepare skaters for the physical demands of figure skating and supports safe, well-rounded development.

Performance & Competition Opportunities

STAR skaters may have opportunities to participate in:
  • Club events
  • Ice shows and exhibitions
  • Interclub events
  • Regional competitions
  • Invitational competitions
  • Other Skate Canada events

Competition is not required to participate in the STAR Program. Skaters can continue developing their skills and completing assessments whether or not they choose to compete.

Every Skater's Journey Is Different

There is no single timeline for progressing through the STAR Program.

Skaters develop at different rates depending on factors such as age, experience, ice time, practice, confidence and individual goals. Coaches work with each skater to help determine the appropriate next steps in their development.

The goal is to help skaters continue building their skills, confidence and love of skating in a supportive environment.
